Get to know our team! Here's Tim McMahon, our Business Development Director - UK
Name: Tim McMahon
Role at BEST: Business Development Director
Where’s your favourite place in the world?
California. Awe inspiring mountains, lakes, valleys, rugged coast, beautiful beaches, amazing national forests & wine country – what’s not to love?!
If you could be any animal, which would you be?
Er, I’d rather not be an animal! Maybe it’s worth pointing out that a friend watched the Netflix show ‘King Louie’ (a lemur from the movie Madagascar) and said he reminded him of me! Maybe it’s because the character, like me, can’t whistle! Or that he is somewhat deluded…! 🤔
What’s the last book you read?
How Not to Be A Professional Footballer (the Paul Merson autobiography). I’m a huge Arsenal fan and as a kid would pretend to be Merson when playing so amazing how good he was considering what he was getting up to!! I’ve just started a new book ‘Crushing It’ by Gary Vaynerchuk. It contains great examples of how successful entrepreneurs built their businesses; they share the secrets of their success and how in particular they have used social media to fast-track their goals. As a company we are making a big push using social media at the moment so I’m hoping to pick up some useful tips…
What’s your favourite movie?
Hmmmm. It changes depending what mood I’m in. I recently saw Guardians of the Galaxy again on a plane; a great combination of humour and action! (I always tell myself I’m going to get work done on flights, but end up watching movies and having a sleep!)
What’s the coolest thing you’re working on right now?
I started working on ideas for a New Referral Program last week! Although it probably doesn’t sound cool, I’m excited about the opportunity to get the word out about what we are doing and how it can help businesses to a wider audience much faster and more effectively, yet at the same time providing exciting rewards to those who opened the door by making the referral. (If you want to be notified when we launch it, please send your email to [email protected])
What’s the best meal you’ve ever had?
I once said I’d get a flight from London to New York just to go back to Wolfgangs restaurant on Park Avenue (https://wolfgangssteakhouse.net/parkave/) for the best steak I’ve ever had! However, the best is from a tasting menu with matching wines at Summer Lodge (https://www.summerlodgehotel.co.uk/food-and-drink/the-restaurant) in Thomas Hardy Country! Great food & drink, matched by excellent service.
What quote do you live by?
But, First Coffee! 😃
(Sorry if you were hoping for something more inspirational!!)
What was your first job?
Iceland Supermarket Chain, part-time while at College!
Interestingly, my first full-time role was working for Troy’s dad Ian (also one of our founders). Troy and I were responsible for the warehouse and manufacturing of motor controllers, where our competitive natures meant that between us we were producing output equivalent of 5+ people! That competitive nature and desire to be the best (no pun intended!) has carried us through with this business… we won’t rest until we’re recognised as the number one choice for multi-site energy saving programs across the globe!
If you could only have three apps on your smartphone, which would you pick?
WhatsApp, Gmail & Safari. (Boring I know!!!)
What’s your most used emoji?
What’s your favourite purchase under £100?
Wireless portable charger (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07GXFQYV4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1); it’s been a life saver because my iPhone seems to run out of battery by the end of most mornings, but this gives me an extra 3.5 charges!
What unusual habits do you have?
I don’t know, maybe you should ask a member of the BEST team that question! They’d probably have no problem telling you what I do that they find irritating, but unusual I’m not sure… My wife says she will often wake at night and I’m asleep clutching my head! But better the stress comes out at night time while I’m asleep than during the day, right?!!! 🤔
Favourite thing about working for BEST?
The people I work closely with; many like Troy Wrigley (CEO), Ben Willcocks (Key Accounts Director), Calvin Conroy (Operations Manager) and Seb Aldworth (Business Development Manager) I have known from my teenage years. If you’re going to climb a mountain it’s nice to have your best friends with you for the journey! Whilst I love those guys and trust them completely, we have also built a strong team that share our passion and vision for this company as well as being a joy to work with.
